Instagram Engagement Rate: What Good Looks Like

Instagram Engagement Rate: What Good Looks Like

Understanding engagement rate

Engagement rate measures the percentage of an account's followers who interact with its content. It is calculated by dividing total engagements (likes, comments, shares, saves) by follower count, then multiplying by 100.

Current benchmarks

Industry benchmarks vary, but as a general guide: an engagement rate below 1% indicates a problem. Between 1% and 3% is average. Between 3% and 6% is good. Above 6% is excellent.

Smaller accounts tend to have higher engagement rates because they have more intimate relationships with their followers. As accounts grow, the percentage naturally decreases, but the absolute number of interactions should increase.

Why engagement rate matters more than follower count

An account with 10,000 followers and a 5% engagement rate is more valuable than one with 100,000 followers and a 0.3% rate. The former has 500 people actively engaging with every post. The latter has 300.
